Roger_MCarthy_1956.JPG
Death of a Warrior234 viewsRoger McCarthy, the CIA officer who trained the first Tibetan freedom fighters on Saipan Island in 1956 (including Wangdu and Athar) and later ran the Tibet operations for the CIA for many years, died on October 26, 2007 in Phoenix, Arizona. Roger, or "Mac" as he was known to the Khampas, debriefed Gompo Tashi Andrustang in Calcutta in 1959-60 when he came out of Tibet. Roger was dedicated to the Tibetan cause and will undoubtedly be reborn as a Khampa nomad.

Roger "Mac" McCarthy in 2006268 viewsRoger McCarthy in 2006 with a Khampa belle at a conference at Stanford University on "The CIA and its Secret War in Tibet." Roger's book, "Tears of the Lotus: Accounts of Tibetan Resistance to the Chinese Invasion, 1950-1962" published in 1997 is an excellent account of the early efforts of the Tibetan Freedom fighters, by the man who helped organize US-supported resistance efforts.
